Spring Term 1
What will your child be learning about?
Traditional Fairy Tales in weeks 1- 5 we will be reading and writing about ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’, ‘The Three Little Pigs’, The Frog Prince, ‘The Gingerbread Man’ and ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. We will be watching a performance of The Frog Prince by the Hobgoblin Theatre Company and taking part in a drama workshop
We will be focusing on calculation and problem solving in Maths
Maths Theme week will be in week 6 . parents will be invited to drop-in and work with their children
What are your child’s targets for Literacy?
· To correctly write their first name without support
· To use the sounds they can hear to read and write a variety of simple words
· To begin to understand the elements of a story eg: characters, main events, beginnings and endings
· To retell a story in the correct order
· To learn and apply the sounds taught in phonics and those sent home
What are your child’s targets for Numeracy?
· Continue to recognise numbers to 10/20
· To add/subtract using a group of objects practically
· To be able to compare weights or heights eg: heavier, lighter, taller, shorter
· To correctly write numbers 0 to 10
· To find one more/less to anumber to 10
What can you do at home to help your child with their learning?
· Visit the local library or the school library – they will have a wide variety of traditional tales that you can read and share with your child (Cinderella, Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin, Sleeping Beauty, Goldilocks etc)
· Keep an eye out for after Christmas sales – you might be able to pick up a bargain book full of traditional tales
· Make puppets using lolly sticks or kitchen rolls at home. This will give your child a chance to retell any of the stories they have been learning about!
· Keep practising writing their first name. Try writing it in shaving foam or mousse – hours of fun!
· Encourage writing for a real purpose such as thank you letters, cards and shopping lists
· Keep counting to 10 or 20 and ask your child what is 1 more/less
