What we are Learning this Term

What’s happening in Year One in Spring Term 2?

Subject
What are we doing?
Literacy

The children’s writing and reading will be linked to the topic of Space; they will be writing postcards from the Moon and other planets, keeping Space journal, writing in character of an alien and creating rhymes and stories from their imaginations.
The children will continue to work on consistent use of capital letters, full stops, fingers spaces and adjectives and some will be using exclamation marks for effect!
Numeracy
The children will be learning about tens and units and knowing the value of each digit, then using this as a strategy for working out addition and subtraction sums for larger numbers. They will continue to be counting forwards and backwards in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. They will be learning how to weigh in standard units and non standard units and be able to order weights and make comparisons.
ICT

The children will continue to use Podium to record their own thoughts and feelings on Space by recording a journal. They will be using dazzle to create space pictures and be using search engines on the Internet (with school filters) to research Space and rockets etc. Some chn will learn how to manipulate ICT to create posters by inserting borders, text and images.
Space
(Science, Art, Music)
Science – the chn will be learning about forces and gravity and will able to name the planets and learn exciting facts about them! They will be carrying out a number of experiments about forces and learn about life in Space!
Art – the topic lends itself to a vast exciting range of Art activities from paper mache planets, building moon buggies and space collages to building rockets and space helmets!
Music – the chn will learn about dramatic music and how this can create an atmosphere, they will use percussion instruments to create their own compositions and listen to famous space music from films and events!
There will also be a trip to INTECH on Friday 11th March to experience the Planetarium and take part in a rocket workshop!
RE
(Holi)
Holi is a festival celebrated in north India. It marks the coming of Spring, usually in March. The children will learnabout how some families hold religious ceremonies. Holi is a colourful festival, with dancing, singing, and throwing of powder paint and coloured water. The children will understand how to be respectful of other cultures and be encouraged to ask qs and make comparisons with their own culture and religion.
SEAL
(Getting on and Falling Out)
Children will think about friendship, they will consider the qualities we look for and need to develop in order to have and be a good friend. They will have the opportunity to practise the skills of good listening and giving and receiving compliments. They will also explore some reasons why friends fall out and how to work well in a group. The emotion of anger is introduced and explored within the context of sorting out arguments. Children will look at what triggers anger, how anger feels, what angry people look like and what strategies they can use when they need to calm down.
What can you do to help?
Here are some ideas:
* Visit the local library and have a look for non fiction books about Space
* Search the Internet and find a video of the landing on the moon
* Draw a space journey and label
* Keep practising counting forwards and back in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s
* Keep learning your spellings, tricky words and sounds
* Talk to your child about their friends in the classroom and what they do when the fall out with others; help build their confidence to solve problems themselves!
What is happening in PPA time (10% non teaching time given to Miss Colbert, Mrs Hull and Mrs Papps?)
The chn continue to receive excellent games coaching from an external sports coach and Mrs Churcher teaches SEAL to the chn on Tuesday afternoons.
