Subject |
What are we doing? |
Literacy
The children’s writing and reading will be linked to the topic of Space; they will be writing postcards from the Moon and other planets, keeping Space journals, writing in character of an alien and stories from their imaginations. The children will continue to work on consistent use of capital letters, full stops, fingers spaces and adjectives and some will be using exclamation marks for effect! |
Numeracy |
The children will be learning about tens and units and knowing the value of each digit, then using this as a strategy for working out addition and subtraction sums for larger numbers. They will continue to be counting forwards and backwards in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. They will be learning how to tell the time to the hour, half past, quarter past and quarter to. |
ICT
The children will continue to use Podium to record their own thoughts and feelings on Space by recording a journal. They will be using dazzle to create space pictures and be using search engines on the Internet (with school filters) to research Space and rockets etc. Some children will learn how to manipulate ICT to create posters by inserting borders, text and images. |
Space (Science, Art, History) |
Science – the chn will be learning about Materials and light and sound. The children will also be able to name the planets and learn exciting facts about them! They will be carrying out a number of experiments about materials and light and dark and learn about life in Space! Art – the topic lends itself to a vast exciting range of Art activities from paper mache planets, building moon buggies and space collages to building rockets and space helmets! History – the children will be looking at the historical event of the moon landing. They will learn about how the event was recorded. They will learn about the people and th e countries involved. |
SEAL (Getting on and Falling Out) |
Children will think about friendship, they will consider the qualities we look for and need to develop in order to have and be a good friend. They will have the opportunity to practise the skills of good listening and giving and receiving compliments. They will also explore some reasons why friends fall out and how to work well in a group. The emotion of anger is introduced and explored within the context of sorting out arguments. Children will look at what triggers anger, how anger feels, what angry people look like and what strategies they can use when they need to calm down. |
What can you do to help? |
Here are some ideas: * Visit the local library and have a look for non fiction books about Space * Search the Internet and find a video of the landing on the moon * Draw a space journey and label * Keep practising counting forwards and back in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s * Keep learning your spellings, tricky words and sounds * Talk to your child about their friends in the classroom and what they do when the fall out with others; help build their confidence to solve problems themselves! |
